FibroMen

Because Men Get Fibromyalgia Too

Aims & Objectives - The FibroMen Mission Statement.

Picture
FibroMen was formed to raise awareness, provide guidance, information and support to men, their families and carers on the subject of Fibromyalgia.

It is widely recognised that fibromyalgia in men is underdiagnosed - with statistics putting the ratio at 70-30% of those diagnosed in favour of women. But why would this be? The number of men presenting at GP surgeries with symptoms of fibromyalgia is rising, but after all of the usual tests and consultations prove negative the medical profession is left flummoxed and fail to diagnose anything. Yet still the pains persist and most men simply put it down to getting older or doing too much.

We have devised a list of objectives to help us fulfil our desire to raise awareness of male fibromyalgia.

  • To actively seek to promote FibroMen and fibromen.org as a key point of reference for sufferers, their families and carers.
  • To research all relevant data and information relating to developments in the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia across genders and evaluate and breakdown the most accurate data pertaining to ratio between the genders.
  • To seek to lobby the medical profession to provide relevant information and advice to GPs, Nurse Practitioners and Consultants in relation to fibromyalgia in men and lay waste to the myth that male fibromyalgia does not exist.
  • To seek to lobby the government to better recognise the condition in men, that it is a debilitating and life-changing illness with no cure.
  • To engage with government and government health officers to promote and fund research into the condition across the genders and seek to find a cure or suitable treatment to allow patients to return to some normality of life.
  • FibroMen and its associated blog (FibroMan Blog) will be utilised to help raise awareness of the condition in men and provide information to men at pre-diagnosis, post diagnosis and moving forward in life with the syndrome, providing information to empower all sufferers of fibromyalgia to access the help they need.

The aim of this site is to raise awareness of Fibromyalgia and associated conditions in men. It is specifically aimed at, but not exclusive to, male sufferers, their carers and families affected by the syndrome.
